November 2026 | Highlights from CCMTA’s Fall Program Committee Meetings

November 5, 2026

CCMTA’s five Program Committees came together in Ottawa on November 4 and 5 for their annual Fall Meetings, making progress across several road safety standards, data and information systems, emerging issues, while helping frame CCMTA's future direction.

Work on several National Safety Code (NSC) standards moved forward, with the Carrier Safety Standards and Compliance Program Committee (CSSC) finalizing proposed changes to NSC 7, 14 (section C 4) and 15 and continuing work on cargo securement and the modernization of NSC 14, carrier safety ratings. The Driver Programs and Standards Program Committee (DP&S) continued the review of NSC 6, Determining Driver Fitness in Canada.

Modernizing road safety data and information systems remained a key area of work. The Data and Technology Services Program Committee (DTS) and Road Safety Research and Policies Program Committee (RSRP) worked together on next steps for the National Collision Data Roadmap, including examining proposed actions to improve the consistency, timeliness and interoperability of collision data across Canada. DTS workshopped how best to develop the CCMTA Data Strategy to support more efficient data exchange between jurisdictions and continued the discussion on how best to offer central driver abstracts. Members explored the evolving mobile driver’s licence landscape and opportunities for shared learning across Canada.

Members continued to address emerging road safety issues and technologies, including adaptive driving technologies and gaps in impaired-driving research. Jurisdictions shared their experiences and identified areas where continued national collaboration could support their work.

Implementation of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2035+ continued and members brought their expertise and jurisdictional perspectives to the development of CCMTA’s next Strategic Plan, looking ahead to 2030 and beyond.

Some of our partners also joined committee discussions, bringing valuable expertise to the work underway. The Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) joined the Road Safety Research and Policies Program Committee (RSRP) to explore opportunities to bring our collective expertise to shared road safety priorities. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) contributed to commercial vehicle safety discussions with the Carrier Safety Standards and Compliance Program Committee (CSSC), while representatives from Trucking HR Canada shared their expertise with the Driver Programs and Standards Program Committee (DP&S) as work continued to support greater consistency in entry-level training for commercial drivers. A representative from Prairie Research Associates joined the Vehicle Strategy and Safety Initiatives Program Committee (VSSI) to explore how heavier personal-use vehicles are approaching the 4,500 kg commercial vehicle threshold. We value these partnerships and the expertise they bring to our work.

CCMTA’s Fall Program Committee Meetings are focused working sessions for jurisdictional members to move important road safety work forward through national collaboration.

Together, we’re working to ensure Canada’s roads are the safest in the world.
