The CCMTA Board of Directors has concluded its October in-person meeting in Ottawa, ON.
Over three days, the Board made progress on key priorities, advanced important national initiatives and continued discussions on CCMTA’s strategic direction for 2030 and beyond.
Key highlights from the meeting include:
-
Strategic Planning for 2030 and Beyond: The Board held a dedicated session on CCMTA’s future strategic direction, acknowledging the changing landscape and discussing how CCMTA can continue to strengthen its role as a national leader in road safety. The next Strategic Plan is expected to be released in spring 2027.
-
Supporting Interprovincial Trucking: The Board approved the workplan to advance the technical modernization of the Carrier Data Exchange (CDE). Rather than building a national database, the work will introduce a modern Application Programming Interface (API), improving how jurisdictions exchange carrier information in real time. This is the next critical step as the changes to NSC 7, 14 and 15 are finalized, laying the foundation for greater consistency in the carrier data collected and stronger oversight of the carrier industry across the country.
-
National Safety Code Standard 6: The Board continued work to review and modernize National Safety Code (NSC) Standard 6, Determining Driver Fitness in Canada, with discussions focused on recommendations related to vision. This marks another important milestone in the ongoing modernization of the standard.
-
Program Committees: The Board was pleased to hear about the progress being made across CCMTA’s expanded Program Committee structure. Key initiatives are moving forward, including the implementation of Canada's Road Safety Strategy 2035+ released earlier this year. The new Data and Technology Services Program Committee is actively developing a Data Strategy for CCMTA and is exploring how mobile driver’s licences can be introduced and advanced in Canada. The Board also received updates on automated and connected vehicles, micromobility, and emerging driver and carrier safety issues.
-
International Collaboration: The Board discussed planning for the 2027 Global Vehicle Registration and Driver Licensing Summit being held in Australia in March of next year. CCMTA is excited to participate as it will provide an excellent opportunity to share road safety priorities, pursue data exchange opportunities and discuss emerging issues with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) in the United States, the Association of European Vehicle and Driver Registration Authorities (EReg) in Europe, and Austroads in Australia.
-
Partner Updates: The Board heard from members representing Canada at the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), International Registration Plan (IRP), Inc., and Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Region V on activities and priorities of mutual interest. Their participation strengthens Canada’s voice in broader road safety discussions while supporting information-sharing and collaboration on shared priorities.
Board members also shared updates from their respective jurisdictions, highlighting progress and new developments across the country. These discussions reinforce CCMTA’s role as a national forum, bringing jurisdictions together to collaborate, share knowledge and advance road safety across Canada.
Together, we’re working to ensure Canada’s roads are the safest in the world.
